Get to know the guitar.
The head or headstock holds the tuners. These are used to adjust the pitch of the strings. Directly below the head is the neck which holds the frets. The frets are those bars that run across the neck. At the bottom of the neck is the body of the guitar. If your guitar is an acoustic guitar, you will see a sound hole in the body to amplify the sound of what you play. If the guitar is an electric guitar, the sound hole will be replaced by pick ups. The pick ups take what you play and send it down a wire or cable to the amplifier. The strings are attached to the tuners, run down the neck, across the sound hole/pickups and then to the bridge, where they connect and are held in some way. Learn to hold your guitar. The thickest string should on top as you look down. Hold the guitar with the neck pointing to one side and parallel to the ground. The body should rest on the thigh of one leg for a comfortable position. As you learn to play guitar, lessons will bring this out naturally.
Learn to tune your guitar.
Before you can begin to learn to play guitar, lessons should include this skill. Resources are many on how to tune the guitar. Books are available; friends who play could show you or you could look online for a tutorial. A guitar can be tuned either with a piano, by ear or with a tuning pipe. Affordable electronic tuners are also available and are a good investment.
When you pick the strings, use just your wrist and not the entire arm. The force with which you pick a string will determine how it will sound. Three types of should be practiced; the down stroke, the up stroke and the alternate (up and down) stroke. As you practice, the best pressure will become evident.
Learn some chords. Buy yourself a book of chords that has diagrams. Practice the chords until you have memorized them completely. If you are serious and want to really play guitar, lessons will be required.
The most common chords should be learned first. A good place to begin is C major, D major and G major. Commit each one to your memory before you move on to the next one. Practice changing chords until it becomes easy and effort free. Practice playing along with songs using these three chords.
When you learn to play guitar, lessons are easy to find from numerous resources. Some sources are magazines, online websites and lesson books. Finding easy play guitar lessons online is the fastest way to go for most people.
To play guitar, lessons are going to eventually be a necessity. The basics are good to get you going, but you will want more from your ability to play guitar. Lessons can and will increase your ability and knowledge.
