So you got a guitar for Christmas and have no idea how to play it. Where do you start at? Learning basic guitar is the answer.
To learn basic guitar, the absolute beginning basics should be on the agenda. Here are a few things to start with.
Get to know the parts of the guitar.
The parts of the guitar are absolutely a necessity to learn basic guitar. Very player should know what the head is, where the tuning keys are, what the neck and frets are as well as the body and the bridge. Why is this important? Because these parts all work together.
The head holds the tuning keys. The tuning keys adjust the tone of the strings. The neck contains the frets and the strings run down the neck, across the frets.
Connected to the neck at the other end is the body of the guitar. If the guitar is acoustic guitar, the body will have a sound hole in the center. If the guitar is electric, there will be pickups in place of the sound hole. These pickups take what is played and send it through a cable to an amplifier.
Learn how to hold the guitar.
As you hold the guitar with the neck to one side and parallel to the ground, the thickest string should on the top. The guitar body should rest on one thigh for a comfortable position. As you are learning basic guitar, comfort is very important.
Tune your guitar.
Before you can begin to learn basic guitar, learn this skill first. You will find numerous resources on guitar tuning. You could read a book, ask a friend who play or you could research online tutorials. Guitars can be tuned several ways. The best way is to use an electronic tuner. Affordable models are available everywhere and are a good thing to have.
Learn to read music.
This is something that I find to be absolutely necessary. Learning to read music is a BIG part of learning basic guitar and can be used later in other areas. Reading music is elemental to learning theory, which you will learn later on.
Once you learn to read music, you can start learning some chords.
Buy yourself a catalogue of guitar chords with diagrams. Practice the chords until you have completely memorized them. This can be a bit boring as playing chords that don’t necessarily carry a melody or tune isn’t much fun.
Learn the most common chords first. A good starting point is to learn C major, D major and G major. Memorize each one and practice changing chords until you can do it without missing a beat. Find songs that use these chords and playing along with them.
When you start learning basic guitar, lessons are simple to locate if you are resourceful. Look for magazines, websites and books.
To learn basic guitar, eventually lessons will be required. Learning the basics will get you going, but you may find yourself wanting more from your newfound abilities to play a guitar.
