Many people start guitar lessons when they are young, but there are also plenty of beginning guitarists of all ages, and with a little bit of searching, you'll be sure to find just the right sort of lessons for you. When you are starting guitar lessons remember a few tips that will help you get the most out of your instruction.

Remember that at the outset, it will be a lot more practical for you to rent an instrument than it will be for you to purchase one. Head to your local music store, one that sells supplies like strings, picks and sheet music as well as guitars and speak with them. Chances are, you'll be able to find someone who either works at the store, or is affiliated with the store in such a way that they will refer you. If possible, speak to some of the other students and ask them about what their feelings on the instructor are.

You'll usually have your choice of how often you want to work, but many instructors prefer working two or three times a week. If your schedule is a bit cramped, you can take it down to once a week, but this will require some independent work on your part. When you are thinking about beginning guitar lessons, set some time apart to work with your instrument independently regardless of how often you are in lessons. While some people do longer sessions a few times a week on their own, most experts agree that a little bit of practice every day is a great way to lay a good foundation for your musicianship.

You can also look online for some great beginning guitar tutorials. These will be most handy for you if you also have a live teacher; some things are just a hundred times easier to learn if you have a real person helping you, but with online tutorials, you can find alternate ways of having things explained to you that can be quite useful. Remember that learning music is cumulative, and that a thorough grasp of the basics will help you as the material gets more difficult.
